Kerala State is located between 8° and 11° N in the Indian Peninsula.It is flanked by the coastline in the west and the Western Ghats in the east. The climate is of the monsoon type with a dry season lasting about four months from December-March. The temperature is moderated under the influence of the ocean or altitude. High productivity of the soil and heavy rainfall have formed luxuriant forests in the State. As might be expected, this vegetation supports varied and magnificent fauna. In recent years the pressure on land for various purposes has caused a rapid fall in wildlife population.
