THATTEKKAD BIRD SANCTUARYEstablished in 1983,the only one of its kind.
Geographic layout
Area : 25sq.kms, a stretch of peninsular land formed between the branches of Periyar River in Malayatoor Forest.
CREDIBLE FEATURES : Teak plantations and natural forests of moist decidous and semi evergreen with high sampling of Terminalias and Lagerstroemia,incorporates an avifauna of nesting indegenous birds,migratory water birds and water side birds.The rivers are milling with fish and shallow for most part of the year. Some of the birds are the Malabar grey horn bill, Great Indian horn bill, Grey jungle fowl, Heron, Egret, Jungle myna,Woodpecker, rose ringed and blue ringed Parakeet. Rare birds like the Celon frog mouth,Rose billed roller etc are also seen here.
