Blessy: the Blessed
Amongst all the usual crap that erupts out of contemporary mediocrity there is always the rare one that takes on a note of adamantine quality. In the Malayalam film industry, much hyped about for the recent onslaught of losses, rare ones were there once: Padmarajan, John Abraham, to name a few. And now the magic has returned, after years of negligence and torment endured by a young man. The industry is ruthless on young talent. Otherwise ?Kazhcha? would have been in theatres long time ago. And axiomatically genius can?t be contained for long. Blessy has struck. Years ago a trivial scandal had ruined this man?s position as Padmarajan?s assistant director. He had to leave, but only after spilling the tears of his heart out to the great man. In reply Padmarajan had said, "Son, if you haven?t sinned, time will prove it." And sure it did. There was a time when Blessy was Padmarajan?s closest associate, starting with ?Namukku Parkaam Munthirithopukal?. Infected by the celluloid repertoire of the great director, Blessy matured, but couldn?t be there for the guru?s last movie, ?Njaan Gandharvan?, due to the scandal. Though he had also worked with other important names like Lohithadas, I.V.Sasi, Sundardas, Venu Nagavalli, Jose Joseph, Jayaraj, etc., it was his dream to make a movie on his own. Thus began his solo career. No wonder no one took him seriously. The very prospect of a movie nil of any masala element itself gave his script a sure place in the dustbin, not to mention the story of the relationship between a kid from nowhere and a Kuttanadan layman. But steadfast devotion for his work and faith in his guru?s lessons wafted him on through the hard times. And this year the movie ?Kazhcha? is a reality. Within the first week itself it?s a massive hit. Critics are flamboyantly praising the work, awarding Blessy the Jaycee?s special award for the Best Director. Blessy, the very name suggestive of blessedness, has done nothing outlandish for his success. He has just stuck to his roots and told a simple story as lucidly as he could, in the age-old time-tested Padmarajanisque technique. He has not strayed even a wee bit from the golden path. For him Padmarajan is the greatest storyteller ever, the god. The guru?s widow cried when she saw ?Kazhcha?,said she wouldn?t be able to sleep that night. Such is the power of this flawless storytelling. The smooth harmony from reel to reel will be there for all to feel. May the blessed strike again with his quiver full of pure, simple love.
