| Callous dumping of waste in thickly populated places has been posing serious health hazards in Pathanamthitta district.
Experts are of the opinion that the heaps of filth, on which rodents and flies abound, have already created an alarming health situation where the threat of diseases like dengue fever, leptospirosis, etc are high. The Nauseating garbage dumps are not uncommon in most towns and village and the authorities concerned had reportedly failed in ensuring effective and safe garbage disposal.
Waste collected from different parts of Thiruvalla is being dumped by the municipality at the municipal stadium in the heart of the town. One of the five leptospirosis cases reported from the district in the past one week was from Thiruvalla.
Health Department sources had confirmed six dengue fever cases and five leptospirosis cases in the district in the last week while unofficial put the number of dengue cases at 12.
Reports said a majority of those affected where either sanitation workers or people who worked in filthy surroundings.
Sanitation workers employed by the Thiruvalla municipality complained of a lack of basic safety equipment to work in filth yards. They alleged that the civic body had not even provided gloves and boots to them. The workers also lamented on the poor wages (Rs.140 per day) given to them by the municipality.
Local self-government institutions had reportedly taken no effective action for waste disposal and fool-proof sanitation.
Mosquito menace had been troubling the people of the district. Waterlogged canals and unclean pools had become safe breeding grounds for vectors. Leaking drinking lines passing through dumping yards aggravate the problem, local people said.
The scarcity of potable water in many parts of Upper Kuttanad had been forcing local residents to depend on the polluted canal there.
