Thiruvalla stood out in literacy and education during the ancient Thiruvithamkur nattu raja rule .Centuries ago, the sree Vallabha temble had a school (gurukulam) which consisted of a thousand students provided with free hostel facility.This time-worn institution , was known as "Thiruvalla shala" . In course of time, functioning of this institution deteriorated. During the 20 th century , education and literacy rate recommenced soaring new heights in the whole of Thiruvithamkur.

The C.M.S school in Thiruvalla was the first school to start teaching English. Literacy furtherance was taken up by the Thiruvalla malayalam Higher school, today it is known as Thiruvalla model girl's high school , formed in the year 1918. The S.C.S and M.G.M institutions started in 1900 ,still makes profund strides in the field of education. During this period , the C.M.S reksha sainyam and the protestant sector started several schools and the illiterate sector of the population were dealt with. The only college that was establish at that time was the Marthomma college, constructed in 1952 run by the marthomma denomination.

Political Leaders like Mr .Elanjikal John jacob,Govinda Nair ,Malayatoor Ramakrishnan N.Srikandan Nair,etc were all personalities who did their schooling in Thiruvalla and were products of C.M.S , S.C.S , M.G.M and D.B.H.S . Great Poets like vennikulam Gopala Kurup and Vidvan C. Kurup taught in these schools. Ms.Nicholson established the Nicholson Syrian girls high school and Ms.Brook smith served as headmistress for the Balikamadom school,are foriegners whom we should never forget.
