Many ancient scripts and scrolls (Thalli ola- archives etched on coconut fronds)like the Shasanas and the Granthas mentions about Thiruvalla ,but by different names. Some of these records listed here gives a vague understanding.

The Vazhapalli Shasana written in A.D 830 mentions Thiruvalla as"Thiruvattuvai" a couple of times.

The Sthannu Ravi shasthra, written in A.D 861 also mentions the same.

The Mamballi Shasana written in A.D 1250 records Thiruvalla as "Thiruvallavazhu "more than two times .

Shuka sandesham ( a Sanskrit scripture from A.D 1325- 1362 ) records the Inhabitants as "Vallabha grama vasi" and Thiruvalla was known as "Vadakumkoor Sree Vallabha" in A.D 1948.

The Unnuneeli Sandesham written in AD 1362 records Thiruvalla has "Nalla vai " a couple of times.

The Chambrolsavam records Thiruvalla as "Thiruvalla vasina" which was created in A.D145
- In Kottarathil Shangunni's Idehyamala, Thiruvalla was known as "Mallikavanam" due to the presence of Sree Vallabha.
In ancient days Thiruvalla was commonly Known as "Valla vai " due to some relation to the river Manimala, then known as " Valla puzha ".
During the reign of the "Thiruvathamkoor Maha Raja",Thiruvalla was a place belonging to the kollam division .In olden days this place was known as Sri- Vallabhapuram and later on changed to Thiruvallabhapuram, which then evolved to the present day name "Thiruvalla".
BUSINESS OF LIFE
Half a century ago , Thiruvalla had the feudal system , where the zamindars were paid with grains. The measurements used during those times were - parra, changazhi,nazhi and the scales used were -Rathal,Thulam,manne,kandi.The workers worked with work-tunes to reduce their workload ,like Chakrapattu , Njattupattu, Koithupattu (Harvest song ) Poli pattu etc The agricultural products produced were marketed by the local vendors and merchents.They buy the products from the Ramapuram market (Kayamkulam) and from the chandakadavu (Thiruvalla) and ferry it to trade centers in places like Alapuzha ,Kochi etc. |
