As in many other places in India, the culture and heritage of Thiruvalla is varied and tied up with its temples. In olden days, temples were not just places of worship but also centers of judicial, educational and cultural activities. Here, the Hindu tradition has kept its purity in peaceful harmony and tolerance towards the other communities.A large number of churches co-existed near a large number of temples in Thiruvalla town. You would notice that there is at least one temple and one church in all the wards in the Thiruvalla municipal area. Three mosque have also accquired an integral prominence in this area.People from various communities were invited to Thiruvalla by the then rulers and were given all assistance for setting up places of worship. Both the sides of the road in front of the Thiruvalla temple were studed with several trading centres, then known as "Chalai". There is a reference to this place in the epic," Unnuneelisandesam". Chalai at that time was a powerful competitor to the markets of Kollam and Kozhikode.
The rulers of Thiruvalla belonged to the Thekkumkoor Dynasty, which had one of its headquarters at Edathil near Kavil Temple. Today's Paliakara Palace is a branch of Lekshmipuram Palace of Changanacherry which was the branch of Alikottu Kovilakam of Pazhancherry in Malabar. The exuberance of Nature has inspired a large variety of artistic expressions. Many of the different styles of folk, ritual and devotional performing arts belonging to thiruvalla, draw their inspiration from nature. |
