| Rt. Rev. Dr. James Kalacherry - the late Bishop of Changanacherry was a genius of a man and a great educationist. In 1949, having felt the poignant need for educated catholic woken, His grace decided to start a Women's College. The College started functioning at the commencement of the Academic year 1950-51, with a strength of 358 women students. His Grace Mar Mathew Kavukattu, the first patron of the college, gave it the name - ASSUMPTION - so as to commemorate the proclamation of the religious dogma of the Assumption of Our Lady. Assumption College, today is one of the biggest colleges for women in India. Recently she has been honoured with the R. Shankar Award for the best college in Kerala. Its aim and objective is to maintain the highest academic standards giving due respect to the noblest Christian ideals and moral values and social justice and create an awareness of the dignity of womanhood and help from an integrated personality.
