| Rice is the staple food, supplemented in some areas by tapioca. The traditional breakfast would consist of ice gruel along with chutney as a side dish, but this is lately replaced by more common indigenous items like the idli and the dosa which is ingested with coconut chutney and sambhar. Other exotic items for breakfast are puttu - steam-cooked rice powder which is usually had with plantain,black channa curry or ghee and sugar.Appam is a sort of pancake made of dough fermented with a small dose of toddy, it looks beautiful because it's circular shape and fringes that looks like flemish lace. The meals, usually taken at noon and for dinner is a rich repertoire that includes sambhar, rasam,vattals, olan, aviyal etc.No place in Kerala can really imagine a cuisine deprived of coconut,and Thiruvalla is no exception.There is an astonishing variety of pickles, made mainly of mango, lime,gooseberry many more coz we have a zeal to pickle anything good that comes by. |
