Who can donate?
- Almost any adult can give his/her blood provided he/she:
- Is between the ages of 18 and 60
- Healthy, free from jaundice or other illness and
- Has a haemoglobin concentration of more than 12.5gm %
What effects does blood donation have on the body?
- The average human body contains 5 to 6 liters of blood.
- 5 liters is in circulation and one is in reserve.
- The usual donation is one pint, which is half (or less) of the reserve supply and which the body is able to replace in a short time.
- Almost any healthy adult can donate blood with no side effects whatsoever.
How often can we donate blood?
- Blood donors can donate blood once in 3 months.
- Within a maximum of 74 hours the volume donated is replaced in our circulation.
